Home Away from Home was exactly the book I was looking for! I run a large family child care home in Northern California and have been trying to create a loving, home like atmosphere for the children and families I'm blessed to care for. Unfortunately, with parents fretting about kindergarten readiness for their 3-year olds and so many products and preschools that prey on the fears of families not doing all they can to prepare their tots for the 'real world', I've been finding myself being blown off course, trying to help the parents see the value in what we do here. This book completely inspired me and I've already applied for the nearest LifeWays training course. Not only were the concepts in the book written very clearly, with great information I could share with my clients, backed up by some very recognizable leaders in the field of early childhood, it was written in such a way that drew me in to every experience! I could practically smell lavender or soup cooking or bread baking. I could feel the sense of calm and being cared for that someone brushing my hair or gently moisturizing me would give. I could nearly hear the soft sounds of a kinderharp or a gentle story being told as I snuggled into my bedding with my very own, lovingly made doll. The feeling of family and community that the rhythm of festivals and gardening with my friends...All in all, I can't say enough about this wonderful book. My passion in caring for children and childhood has been rekindled and it's so helpful to have a path being forged ahead of me!-Sarah

I have been in early childhood education for over 20 years but have always felt like a piece of the puzzle was missing. A couple of years ago, I was able to attend a Lifeways workshop and I knew I had found what I was looking for. In the book, "Home Away from Home," readers are given a thorough overview into a style of childcare that nurtures everyone involved - the children, parents and caregiver. The Lifeways approach can be used in either a home daycare or center. Activities such as stoytelling, picking vegetables from the garden for lunch, and feeling a warm wash cloth on your hands and face after eating are part of the everyday routine. Children are also given substantial time for creative play both indoors and out. By being in the company of the same caregivers as the child grows, a deep understanding takes place and the child feels loved and appreciated. Parents aren't forgotten either. They are encouraged to linger, help their child with their routines and attend special gatherings and celebrations. By the time you are finished with this book, you will have a good understanding of what the Lifeways approach looks like. This book also delves into many of the questions you might have about how to make this approach work for you.
This is a must for LifeWays and Waldorf educators in early childhood. It is just priceless. I feel so great reading it and it gives me so many ideas.
I found Home Away From Home to be a wise, penetrating and reader-friendly manual for anthroposophic child care, invaluable for directors of LifeWays Centers, teachers and parents alike. When I showed it to our licensor, he said that all child care directors should read this book. He knows the LifeWays model only from our place, the Rose Garden Early Childhood Center, but he is an expert on quality child care after thirty years of licensing child care Centers in New York State.
I ordered home away from home because of my interest in learning more about the work of lifeways centers. this book was beautifully written with wonderful excerpts and stories from actual lifeways childcare providers. as a parent i enjoyed learning more about how to adopt these principles into our everyday living. i highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in working with children either in a childcare setting or simply to enhance your own relationship with your own children.

Sigh... if everybody would read this book, the world would be a better place. Or if at least childcare institutions would learn from the LifeWays organizations and offer children a home away from home instead of only focusing on making more money and overwhelming kids with early academics and less and less free play. A wonderful book.
