Who's Your Daddy, Baby? is a quirky paternity mystery with a Facebook twist. Inspired by the author's experience, it is the story of Lori Pomay, a happily married career woman living in suburban Washington, D.C.  Lori undergoes genetic testing for in vitro fertilization and her world is rocked when she is told the dad she always knew could not possibly have been her biological father.  This mid-life shocker sends her into an alternately hilarious, heartwarming, and heartbreaking search for truth about her heritage - from Appalachian Cherokees to a Purple King, with high-rolling gamblers, car dealers, dentists, and all manner of older, confused amnesiacs along for the ride.  It's a mystery which should appeal to those searching for their roots, with DNA testing foibles and myths of history exposed.

With Lori's mother having died in the 1990s, taking many of the answers to her questions with her, the situation was rife with miscalculations.  Initially, the protagonist Lori McGuire Pomay's only clues to a prospective unknown biological father's identity are memories of her late mother discussing pre-marital dating in the mountains of southwestern Virginia, and faded old letters from several paternal contenders, written around the time of her conception in the apparently swinging spring of 1958.  The hunt eventually involves possibly ten paternal prospects; their families and friends; the membership of two churches; the high-rolling gambler ex-husband of a famous Hollywood actress; two families of car dealers; several free-spirited road trips around Virginia, and numerous humorous telephone calls and e-mails.

It all boils down to timing and opportunity.  Lori learns more than she ever wanted to know about the vagaries of female fertility, the fallibility of half-siblingship DNA testing, problems with blood type testing/mutations, the impact of several genetic mutations - and her late mother's courtships.  Readers learn more than they might have known about Appalachian heritage, northern European ethnicity, inbreeding, sex and Rock n' Roll in the 1950s, the bonds of motherhood, and the nature of paternity.  Throw in the onset of a puzzling hereditary vertigo condition set off by hormone injections, plus a trip to the hospital for chest pains, and Who's Your Daddy, Baby? will leave your head spinning.

It's a magical mystery tour and "Who Done It" classic maybe only a mother could create, and as Paul McCartney might say, the answer to which maybe only your mother should know.  Then again, there's the possibility medical testing mistakes might be fueling this comedy of errors, but, whatever the answer, Lori's world is forever changed by the journey.

What a delight! I know of a surprise or two, in the paternity department. But this tale, full of twists and turns of a woman trying to solve the mystery of who her biological father is -- without revealing to the man she always knew as "Dad" that she has discovered he's probably not The One -- wow. I love the humor Pell imbues in her fictional protagonist. Alfter all, one has to laugh as well as cry when considering one's own deceased mother as a sexual being who might have had more than one partner on the weekend when she was most likely to conceive. Especially when the protagonist's roots make her rerturn to the Appalachian communities she thought her mom had left when they moved to Washington, DC in her childhood, the search becomes more interesting. In these small towns, where everyone knew everyone, the next generation is helpful. Yet, the story spills onto Facebook, which, with the aid of DNA testing, turns into a godsend. The truth comes out, but only after wrong turns and wonderful friendships, if not kinships are established. Pell tells us this account is a fictionalized version of her own search. One can't help but wonder if only the names of people and towns have been changed, mostly. It sure rings true. And it's so fun to read! Moves right along and as I got to the final 1/3 of the book, I couldn't put it down. I look forward to reading Pell's following two books. The latest just came out. Yay!

Who Your Daddy Baby? Lisa Pell 9781608300778 Books Reviews

Whether the story is true or fiction, it kept my attention all the way. I could relate to a lot of the situations Lisa went through. I would highly recommend it.
I absolutely loved the book! I really felt like I had been on a BIG roller coaster ride with all the twists and turns, and ups and downs of her search. Lisa had me up until the very last. She has such a gift and her ability to express such a personal account of her "hunt for her biological father" in such a humorous and revealing manner was captivating. Truly a must read!!!!! Thank you, Lisa!!!!!
A compelling read. “Who’s Your Daddy, Baby?” is an amazing story of one woman’s journey to find her biological father. Lisa Pell is able to captivate us taking us through each and every twist and turn in “Lori McGuire Pomay’s” search to identify her biological father. The shock of learning her father wasn’t her biological father in midlife set her on a “magical mystery tour” adventure with her loving supportive husband, tracking down and questioning old flames and friends of her mother’s. I gained great insight into the in vitro fertilization process and have new admiration for women and men that embark on that journey. This wonderful book underscores the importance of parents being forthcoming of their child’s origin and genetic background. I was enthralled learning about the life struggles of a Virginia mountain girl in the fifties and surprised to learned that below the surface, the times were less than puritanical. It is a provocative story told with lots of humor and the beauty of couple relentlessly joining together to uncover the truth.
I just finished reading Who's Your Daddy, Baby? with the subtitle being A Quirky Paternity Mystery with a Facebook Tist. What an interesting ride!

Auhtor Lisa Pell's heroine of this fictionalized saga, Lori McGuire Pomay, is considering in vitro fertilization (IVF). Needing to know her genetic history for possible future birth defects, Pomay needs to find out what her parents' blood types are.

Pomay's own blood type is B+. She finds out her mother's blood type is O and her father's blood type is purportedly A. Yes, I said A. If this man who married her mother were her father, Pomay should have the same blood type as Mr. Nick McGuire.

Not everyone finds out the man they assumed was biological dad wasn't. If one or both parents have passed away, such was with Pomay's mother being deceased, why not sleeping dogs lie? The answer to find out if a possible IVF baby might have birth defects.

To find her biological father, Pomay uses love letters her mother received from various suitors. She follows a multitude of hunches these letters present, as well as interviews with about a baker's dozen of her mother's contemporaries.

Author Lisa Pell describes Pomay's vivid mountain heritage in the southern hills of Virginia. Her mother is from the hills proper; whereas, all contenders for the title of father come from nearby small towns.

Much like the descriptive style of Pat Conroy, Pell's writing transports you to Pomay's Grandma Franklin's home, where you can smell the smoke from the wood stove, taste the fatback, and hear the rain on the tin roof.

All the events take place more than fifty years ago; the descriptive narrative found in this tome is a joy to read for anyone interested in days gone by. Family genealogy hints at a royal heritage.

I won't tell you who Pomay's father is. You need to take the journey yourself.
Don't be put off by the apparently ordinary story-line a quirky but basically normal middle-class person seeks to resolve lingering uncertainties about her true parentage. Ho-hum. To tell the truth, by about half-way through the book I no longer cared at all about that outcome. But that's not the reason for reading this book. We all know that most fiction is only a little bit of fiction wrapped around life as the author knows it. Ms. Pell has produced a superb evocation of life a couple of generations ago, as revealed through the materials she ends up researching. We may think of the Greatest Generation in terms of the gravitas of the Depression and its wartime coming of age, but in fact (at least for this group of characters) the later free-love campaigns must have seemed a bit like deja vu. The book is also extremely revealing as to the limitations of DNA technology, and it really leaves you scratching your head as to whether it ought to be admissible in legal proceedings. Having met the author in person, it's going to be a bit of a challenge next time, as it will be extremely difficult to keep from wondering precisely how much of this sometimes bizarre tale is quite true and how much imagined.
